Indian Trade Links - Seventy Weeks Are Determined (Dan. 9:24-27) Jack Marti

Here's my attempt to clear up some confusion about this text. A large number, if not the majority of Evangelical Christians believe there's going to be a seven year period of tribulation after the church is supposedly raptured out. However, most of them cannot tell you where this seven year tribulation is found in the Bible. Well, here's where they get it. They say somehow prophetic time is put on hold between the sixty-ninth and seventieth week of Daniel's seventy week prophecy, and that as soon as the church is raptured out, that's when the seventieth week begins. I see several problems with this theory, but the main problem I have with it is the event that takes place in the midst of the seventieth week. The only event in history that took place that could cause "the sacrifice and the oblation to cease," in other words the end of offering of animal and other sacrifices to atone for sin, was the death of the Lamb of God (Jesus) on the cross. That event took place in 31 A.D. Do you see my point?Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people And upon thy holy city, To finish the transgression, And to make an end of sins, And to make reconciliation for iniquity, And to bring in everlasting righteousness, And to seal up the vision and prophecy, And to anoint the most Holy.Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the commandment To restore and to build Jerusalem Unto the Messiah the Prince shall be Seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: The street shall be built again, And the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks Shall Messiah be cut off, But not for himself: And the people of the prince that shall come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; And the end thereof shall be with a flood,And unto the end of the war Desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant With many for one week: And in the midst of the week Shall he cause the sacrifice And the oblation to cease, And for the overspreading of abominations He shall make it desolate, Even until the consummation, And that determined Shall be poured upon the desolate.Daniel chapter nine, verses twenty-fourThrough twenty-seven.Music by Jack Marti 2004

Mar 28, 2010 - Daniel 9:27 says "he" (Jesus Christ) made a covenant with many & fulfilled it with his death on the cross. But verse 27 is about CONFIRMING (gabar=to pravail upon) & not MAKING OR FULFILLING that covenant. With his death on the cross in 30-33 AD Christ LEGALLY (in God's sight) ended the need for oblation & animal sacrifices. But even the apostles practiced it during the early church years. Thus, it needs to be ended by force by the "people of the prince" (ROMAN ARMIES) used by Christ .

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - Daniel 26 says the people of the prince shall destroy the temple and Jerusalem. It is within the 70th week. But your calculation did not take it into consideration because it happen years after the death of Stephen. You have a big problem here.

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - In what week will you put this event of the destruction of the temple & Jerusalem? And the people of the prince that shall come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; And the end thereof shall be with a flood,And unto the end of the warDesolations are determined. The passage was placed after the 69th week & before the 70th week. I believe it is part of the 70th week where in the midweek the sacrifices ended. It's end is the consequence of the total destruction of the temple in verse 26.

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - So there was a time gap after the death of Christ at the end of the 69th week. The gap is called prophetic compression. It spans a generation about 36-40 years from 30-33 AD to 66-73 AD. It's not more than 1,980 years as claimed by Futurists & Dispensationalists. The gap allows for the transition of the Old Covenant of Law to the New Covenant of Grace. It also allows time for the repentance of the generation that rejected & killed Christ. It demonstrates God's patience and love.

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - Titus cannot be the "coming prince" since that prince is also the "he" that CONFIRMS the covenant with many. There is no historical account of Titus having made a covenant with anyone. It is not the Anti-Christ because he cannot make a covenant of grace that fulfills the 6 purposes of the 70 weeks which are detailed in verse 24. These 6 goals are all related to the salvific work of the Messiah which he completed on his death on the cross. "is finished." Yet the animal sacrifices needs to end.

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - Further, Titus cannot be the "coming prince" since that prince is also the "he" that CONFIRMS the covenant with many by causing the OBLATION & SACRIFICES TO STOP in the middle of the 70th week.According to the Jewish Historian Josephus, Titus gave an order to his men not to destroy the temple but his men disobeyed him. So how could anyone say Titus is the "leader" or "prince" of the "people of the prince" which destroyed the temple in verse 26?

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - Except for your interpretation of the 70th week you 're right to say that the completion of the 70 weeks (490 years) happened in the 1st century in the lifetime or generation of his apostles Christ mentioned in Matthew 24:34. After all the salvific work of the Messiah with his death on the cross made it possible for the 6 benefits detailed in Daniel 9:24 to be available to believers in Christ. Thus, if all the 6 benefits have been made available for us by Christ then the 70 weeks are complete.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - You ask some good questions and make good points. I will only offer this for you to consider:1. If Jesus' ministry started in A.D. 27 when He was baptized, that marked the end of the first 69 prophetic weeks, and the beginning of the 70th.2. His ministry lasted 3 and a half years, during which He fulfilled all the prophecies concerning the prophetic types that represented Him up to that point, up to and including His death and resurrection.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - 3. The significance of the sacrificial system ended with Jesus' death and resurrection.4. 3 and a half years after Jesus death and resurrection, Stephen was stoned, and shortly thereafter Paul was called to be the apostle to the Gentiles.5. All the above was literally fulfilled during Daniel's 70 prophetic weeks without a gap.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - 6. It is not necessary for verse 16 to be fulfilled during the seventy week period because it is an event that looks beyond the seventy week prophecy, "the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city, etc."7. It was the the "prince" that destroyed the temple, but "the people of the prince."8. That prince could not be Jesus, because His people did not destroy the city or the temple.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - 9. If you really feel that the prince needs to be Jesus in verse 16, than it's possible to see Titus and his armies as the tools with which Jesus fulfilled this future prophecy within the context of the seventy week prophecy.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - 10. The fact that the prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem is included in the context of the seventy week prophecy does not necessitate a gap between the 69th and 70th week, but as you rightly pointed out, it does illustrate God's mercy in giving space for repentance to individuals, though not the nation of Israel after the stoning of Stephen.

guitmartiman Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - Sorry, point #7 should say: It was not the "prince" that destroyed the temple, but "the people of the prince."

csdr0 Says:

Mar 28, 2010 - @guitmartiman, The explicit purpose of the 70th week is to CONFIRM (gabar=to prevail upon) the Covenant of Grace which should result to the 6 things mentioned in Daniel 9:24. It is not to FULFILL a covenant since it was already fulfilled by Christ's death on the cross. The end of sins (sin offerings=animal sacrifices) needs to be enforced or prevailed upon the Jews. The destruction of the temple in 70AD stops the oblation & sacrifices. The Book of Hebews talks about its coming end.

csdr0 Says:

Mar 29, 2010 - , Oh yes, Peter in answering the ridicule of those who inquire about the delay in Christ's coming (the prince who is to come in Daniel 9:26) replied that it was due to God's patience in waiting for the repentance of Israel. it obviously did not happen which accounts for the fulfillment of prophecies concerning the destruction of the Jewish temple & Jerusalem & the end of their religion in Daniel 9:27-27 - described by Christ in Luke 21 as the day of vengeance.

JoBernard12oxen Says:

Apr 2, 2010 - Israel rejected "Christ" "The only acceptable sacrifice, God will "never"bend to Israel's rejection; temple sacrifices will never be acceptable "ever". Dan.9 24-27 Jerusalem rebuilt in troublesome times Neh4:16 "unto" Messiah, which was cut off (crucified) the (new) covenant confirmed for 1 week (a generation) in that generation sacrifices/oblations ceased, Jerusalem destroyed by prince (Cesar), flood makes it desolate til end (days) overspreading of temple is til Christ consumes/bound devil, EZ

JoBernard12oxen Says:

Sep 7, 2010 - Dan.9:27 He (Messiah) shall confirm the covenant (NT) confirmed for "one week"=a generationIn the midst of the generation (as in AD30 to AD90) e.g. AD33 + 30 years=e.g. AD 63 He shall cause the sacrifices and oblations to cease(as in AD70)Jerusalem destroyedAnd for the overspreading of abomination=something will overspread the very same location where the sacrifices and oblations were offeredIt shall be desolate=Israel unable to sacrificeUntil consummation=until Satan's kingdom is consumed

JoBernard12oxen Says:

Sep 7, 2010 - Dan.9:26 After "threescore and two weeks"=Messiah is perfectly confirmed as the fullness of man Shall Messiah be cut off=crucifiedNot for himself-to save menThe people of the prince-Cesar destroy the city Jerusalem/sanctuary (as in AD70) and the end thereof shall be with a flood=as in flood of AD90 Unto-(to make ready) the end of the war (consummation)=unto the end of the war between Jesus and Satan, "end times" the city shall be desolate=Jerusalem shall be uninhabited until the end of days

JoBernard12oxen Says:

Sep 7, 2010 - Dan.9:24 Is determined=is appointed to come to your people/holy cityHe will:Finish transgression=make transgression forgivableMake an end of sin=provide final and complete pardon for sinMake reconciliation for iniquity=man can be restored in right relationship with GodBring in everlasting righteousness=his righteous kingdom is forever Seal up the vision and prophecy=conclude, finish, complete the fore seen kingdomAnoint the most Holy one=the most Holy one is anointed. "object" the Messiah

JoBernard12oxen Says:

Sep 7, 2010 - Dan.9:24 70 weeks-seven=perfect, perfection, holy, pure, full, whole, etc. seventy=perfect God, perfection of God. Jesus said forgive with the perfection of God times perfection or "forgive as I would" seventy times seven.Weeks= that which is multiplied by seven, seven day, perfect or sevened, or a generation: Strong's 7620,7650,7651 "Seventy" "weeks"= (the perfection of God) (multiplied by "perfection") =the perfection of God multiplied by perfection is the object of the sentence.

yastunt Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - The assumption of a gap between the 69th and 70th week could be the biggest blunder in the history of bible interpretation. .

mybyahmin Says:

Dec 5, 2010 - Both views r wrong IMO. The transgression refers to the 4th kingdom (Dan 8:23). Christ has not put an end to transgression, nor has he made an end of sins, nor has he made reconciliation for iniquity, nor has he brought in everlasting righteousness, nor has he sealed up the vision and prophecy, which is of YHWH's kingdom (Dan 2:44, Isa66:15). For a proper breakdown see TheAfrican(dot)Com(slash)BHC(dot)pdf, starting at p. 34. But really you should start at the beginning of Chap. IV.- Malachi

DanielJohn2300 Says:

Sep 30, 2011 - Amazing prophecy! On the day of atonement, they would tie a red thread to the temple door. If it turned white, it meant that God approved their sacrifice. According to both the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, the thread stayed red for all 40 years leading up to the destruction of the temple, which was in 70 AD. Therefore, in the midst of the 70th week, the red thread stopped turning white forever.
